We and TV
By Nataly Orlova
How often we watch TV or movie in the cinema or read a book eating at the same time? We used to consider meal as a background for other our occupations. Sitting in front of the TV screen we have a snack being replete enough. Usually it happens between 8 and 11 pm. Well known situation? Isn’t it a pleasure to watch the show or movie you like together with tasty sandwiches? And all this after normal supper only few hours later! This way we receive more calories that we really need.
Every day looking TV we have a higher risk of obesity. It is interesting but melodrama and chiller whet the highest appetite. From the other hand telecasts about travel and nature are considered as low-calorie.
As for commercials… The moment commercial begins we feel irresistible desire to go to the kitchen and prepare another portion of sandwiches (popcorn, chips, chocolate, drinks and so on) for further watch. You don’t agree? As a matter of fact we have no hunger but have a snack through habit.
The most dangerous time from this point of view is between 11 pm and 1 am. By this time we watched already a movie and found another interesting telecast on other channel. Our tired brains become more vulnerable for any fleeting impulses of ‘false hunger”. Besides we try to drive away sleep. To do it we do something for example have a snack. When we get sweeties we raise rate of sugar in the blood. That stirs us up and doesn’t let us sleep.
Try to look at yourself. How often do you have a snack watching TV in the evening? You sit till late in front of TV screen to watch the show you like. But in fact you are tired already and want to sleep. To drive away sleep you chew something all the time. Now you understand what is going on?
Try to change your day regimen a bit. Try not to watch TV till late and go to bed before midnight. This way you defend yourself from impulses of ‘false hunger”. In the morning you will feel yourself much better. Your morning hours become most productive for you. You will manage to do much more these hours.
Sometimes we eat through psychological reasons. Meal can draw us away from them as a TV too. But food is not the best and a short-term method. If you suffer from depression or loneliness these problems remain unsolved by it. Moreover you add one more problem - the problem of overweight.
Sincerely yours,
Nataly
